Installation Introduction

Selecting the correct size is very important when purchasing your solar water heating system. When you have determined what size collector suits your needs, you can start to arrange where to install it. Please click here to find out how many vacuum tubes you need.

Obviously you are wanting to maximize the amount of solar energy recovered every day of the year. Therefore, it is very important to obtain the correct angle of the panels as it will affect the efficiency of the solar system..

Firstly, if you are in the Southern Hemisphere then the solar panel should be faced north ( i.e. New Zealand ), and the opposite applies to the northern hemisphere , where the panels should face south.

Secondly, the angle at which you mount the solar panel is ideally, the latitude of your location plus fifteen degrees For example:
- Auckland has a latitude of 36oSouth - the solar panel should therefore face north at a 51oangle.
- Dunedin has a latitude of 45oSouth - the solar panel should therefore face north at a 60oangle.

Please click here to find out the latitude of your location.

Having the panels at this optimum angle will allow some leeway for sizing your system for the winter months, which is generally when you need more hot water. If you have installed a swimming pool or spa, the excess hot water created in the summer can be directed into either of these . We would not encourage our customers to oversize their systems unless they have a use for the additional hot water created in the summer months. Another advantage in installing your panels at such a steep angle is that they will have less tendency to overheat in the summer as they will have less exposure to the sun.
